MIDDLETOWN. NJ – Middletown Township has met the rigorous requirements to achieve a Sustainable Jersey certification.
“Achieving Sustainable Jersey certification is a tremendous accomplishment for Middletown and reinforces our dedication to saving money and improving our quality of life through the adoption of sensible, environmentally sustainable practices,” said Mayor Gerard P. Scharfenberger. “This certification will allow Middletown to access numerous incentives and grants to further its leadership role in this area."
To become certified at the Bronze level, Middletown successfully completed numerous priority and required actions including establishing a Green Team Action Committee, conducting an energy audit of multiple municipal facilities, implementing the Township’s “Buy Local” program, creating vehicle anti-idling policies, finishing a municipal carbon footprint, pledging support for state’s Wildlife Action Plan and Sustainable Land Use, and endorsing adoption of green building practices, Planning and Community Development Director Greenspan said. Middletown is one of only 67 New Jersey municipalities that have attained A Sustainable Jersey certification since the program began in 2009.
“Sustainable Jersey dovetails perfectly with our Green Initiative, a local cache of eco-friendly projects and programs aimed at helping Middletown live greener, conserve energy and reduce dependency on foreign oil,” said Mayor Scharfenberger, who spearheaded the initiative in 2007.
Other projects undertaken include Recycle2$ave, which encourages residents to recycle more; a bio-fuel pilot program which utilizes used vegetable oil to fuel township vehicles; installation of energy efficient light bulbs in township buildings; Dock and Roll, a free community shuttle service; and a planned native plant garden installation at Poricy Park with grant assistance from the Sustainable Jersey Program.
Middletown Township will be honored for earning the certification at the Sustainable Jersey awards luncheon held during the League of Municipalities Convention on Tuesday, November 16 at the Sheraton Hotel, Atlantic City. Sustainable Jersey is a collaborative effort between the
New Jersey State League of Municipalities’ Mayors’ Committee for a Green Future and the Municipal Land Use Center at The College of New Jersey, in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. The policies and other substantive contents of the program are developed though a transparent participatory process involving NGOs, academics, government, and the business community. Program sponsors include the Geraldine R.
