The Brookdale Big Band is a 20-piece group that specializes in Jazz Swing music reminiscent of the Swing Bands of the 1940s and 1950s.  The Band specializes in the musical repertoire of many of the artists of the period; Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie.  The goal of the Band is to provide the listener with a glimpse of an art form that is uniquely American – jazz is internationally recognized as America’s classical music.

The Brookdale Big Band is comprised of some of Central New Jersey’s best professional musicians featuring faculty members from Brookdale’s music and speech departments.

Joe Accurso founded the Big Band in 1985 for the purpose of preserving and propagating traditional jazz music.  He also runs the electronic music facility at Brookdale, which has been cited as one of the most progressive facilities of its type in the nation. Vocalist Barbara Baron has been with the Brookdale Big Band since its inception.
