Literacy NJ Monmouth County Joins Nation in Volunteer Action for 25th MLK Day of Service

Long Branch, NJ - Literacy NJ Monmouth, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy, will hold a Day of Service community celebration on Tuesday, January 28th from 6-8 pm at the Amerigo Anastasia Grammar school in Long Branch.

Literacy NJ is inviting all community members to join our celebration and learn about ways to support adult literacy students and immigrants in our community through volunteering as a literacy tutor. Current and former students will talk about their experiences with our program, either in working with a one-on-one tutor, or participating in an ESL group like the one currently being held at the Anastasia School for parents of grammar school students.

“Today we answer Dr. King’s call to serve and are making a difference in the lives of Monmouth County residents,” said Jhanna Even, Program Director of Literacy NJ.  “A resourceful way to meet local needs, volunteer service is a powerful tool that builds strong communities. We are putting the core American principles of citizenship and service into action.”

The MLK Day of Service encourages all Americans to improve communities through volunteer service. 2020 will mark the 25th celebration of the annual service event since Congress designated the MLK holiday the first ever National Day of Service and charged CNCS with leading this effort.

With an emphasis on creating opportunity for all, Americans of all ages and backgrounds in all 50 states will re-commit themselves as citizens by volunteering in service to one another. Projects include delivering meals, refurbishing schools and community centers, collecting food and clothing, and building homes. Volunteers will also recruit mentors, provide services for veterans and military families, and help citizens improve their financial literacy skills.

The MLK Day of Service is led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that engages millions of Americans in service through its AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs and leads the nation’s volunteer efforts. For more information, visit nationalservice.gov.
