SPRING LAKE, NJ - Seven thousand and 671 road racers (4,118 men - 3,553 women) began celebrating the Memorial Day weekend, on the sunny, low 70 degrees, humid Saturday morning of May 23rd, by competing in the 33rd annual Spring Lake Five Mile Run (9500 registered), which is, according to race director Phil Hinck, the largest race in New Jersey, and the largest five-mile race in the nation.

Coming in first of this huge crowd of racers from a basically rectangular course was Craig Segal, 25, of Holmdel at a racing time of 24:54 and this is 19 seconds faster than his winning time of this event last year. "We were running in a pack until about the 4th mile and then I was able to take the lead," said Segal in describing his championship performance.

When my mom died last year at 93, I found a small stack of letters written to her from her brother, my Uncle Michael, who died in World War II. They were wrapped in a rubber band which had since lost its elasticity and each page was yellowed with age. She kept them in their envelopes so the letters themselves were still legible and only worn at the folds. The top right hand corner of each letter held the words "Somewhere in England" just above the date. Every letter was signed, "Your loving brother, Michael."

I spent much of my childhood living with my grandmother; slept in an attic room which housed a shrine in his honor. There was an 8x10 sepia photograph of Uncle Michael looking extremely handsome in his Army uniform. The picture was flanked by his Army hat and a grenade which he must have sent home as a souvenir. I slept on an army cot complete with its scratchy military green wool blanket. Downstairs in the living room in the far corner stood a wooden clock, a gift to his mother from Germany with wooden cubes with the date remains permanently set as March 2nd, the day he died. Next to the clock on the shelf was a stack of letters which I caught my grandmother reading several times and each time she placed then back on the shelf she cried.
