Thorne Middle School Honors Its Namesake, Cpl. Horace ‘Buddy’ Thorne

Newsbrief - Schools

Written by Middletown Township School District Wednesday, 27 January 2010 08:13

Middletown, NJ -  The Thorne Middle School Community recently held a special celebration honoring their namesake, Cpl. Horace M. "Buddy" Thorne on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of his death at the Battle of the Bulge. On that fateful day, Corporal Thorne acted heroically to save the lives of members of his company while taking out a German tank, along with several Germans, and sending them into retreat during Nazi Germany’s last ditch effort to stem the tide of WWII. For this heroic action, for which he gave his life, Buddy Thorne was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest honor the United States bestows upon its military. Nearly 50 years ago, the Thorne family entrusted that medal, along with official citations and pictures, to Thorne Middle School upon the naming of that school for its most famous resident.

ASBURY PARK – The Monmouth County Health Department is partnering with Jersey Shore University Medical Center to conduct an H1N1 vaccination clinic and lead screening at the Holy Spirit Church, 705 Second Ave. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 31.

The vaccine at this clinic will be available at no charge in both the injectable and flu mist forms. Thimerisol-free vaccine will be available as well.

Individuals who may not receive the H1N1 or any influenza vaccine are:

  • those with an allergy to eggs and egg proteins
  • anyone with a previous life threatening reaction to a flu vaccine
  • individuals with a history of Guillain-Barre syndrome

Clinic participants will be screened by a registered nurse regarding risk factors and educated about the vaccine. Translators will be available. A parent or guardian must sign a vaccine consent form for children under 18 years of age. Additionally, children less than 10 years of age will require two doses of the vaccine, which should be given approximately one month apart.

February is a Short Month That’s Long on Activities

Newsbrief - Monmouth County

Written by MC Public Information Office Wednesday, 27 January 2010 08:20

FREEHOLD, NJ – February may be the shortest month of the year, but you wouldn’t know it by the number of events and happenings in Monmouth County.

The county tourism calendar lists more than 40 events, ranging from opera to the circus, live theater to live concerts, belly dancing to photography and, of course, chocolate.

The list is bound to grow as the month draws near. Check for updates on the county Web site at www.visitmonmouth.com or call 1-800-523-2587.

Many holidays are celebrated in February: George Washington’s birthday, for example, at Allaire State Park is just one week after the park celebrates Valentine’s Day – both celebration events will have an 1830s theme. Ocean Grove and Spring Lake have long weekend celebrations, including Ocean Grove’s Chocolate Lovers’ Weekend. The Algonquin Arts Theatre in Manasquan, offers The Hot Club of San Francisco’s Valentine Jazz-Up, a blend of Gershwin and gypsy swing reminiscent of 1930s Paris jazz clubs.
