Emergencies on Ice Drills Help Prepare Responders

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – Members of the Atlantic Highlands First Aid & Safety Squad, the Atlantic Highlands Fire Department and Keyport First Aid braved bone chilling temperatures to train for emergencies on the ice.

The organizations gathered at the Atlantic Highlands municipal harbor for the drill, which took place with temperatures in the teens.

"Today's drill was a success,” said Tom Hayden, first lieutenant of the AHFAS. “Our rescuers were able to practice in realistic conditions and new members became acquainted with the equipment and procedures.”

MIDDLETOWN – The Middletown Township Health Department will hold an H1N1 vaccination clinic on Monday, February 8, 2010 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Croydon Hall, 900 Leonardville Rd, Leonardo. This clinic is open to the general public for those 6 months of age and older. Vaccinations are free of charge.

Individuals are encouraged to complete consent forms prior to arrival to expedite registration. Visit www.middletownnj.org; click the H1N1 link for downloadable consent forms. Please note there are separate forms for children and adults.

Individuals who may not receive the H1N1 or any other influenza vaccine are those with a serious allergy to eggs and egg proteins, anyone with a previous life threatening reaction to a flu vaccine and individuals with a history of Guillain-Barre syndrome. Scholarship Contest Open to High School Juniors and Seniors in Middletown

MIDDLETOWN, NJ - High school juniors and seniors who live in Middletown are invited to submit essays about their local government for a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship in the 2010 Louis Bay II Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition.

The scholarship is offered though a joint venture between local mayors and the New Jersey League of Municipalities. The contest is open to any high school junior or senior who lives in Middletown. Each student must write an approximately 500-word essay on the theme, “What My Mayor and Governing Body Do Best,” to be included in the contest. The theme is chosen by the state League of Municipalities.

“The theme is designed to advance the virtues of elected and volunteer positions in municipal government while raising awareness of municipal government in general,” explained Mayor Gerard P. Scharfenberger.

All essays must be received by March 12, 2010. Middletown will select one essay to forward to the League of Municipalities in Trenton as a semi-finalist. The League of Municipalities will then choose fifteen finalists and 3 scholarships winners. Winners will be announced in May. Winning essays will be featured in the New Jersey Municipalities magazine.

Applications are available at area schools, the Mayor’s Office, located at Town Hall and at www.middletownnj.org. For more information, students should check with their high school or call the Mayor’s office at (732) 615-2024.
