Petition to Reduce Size of Proposed Bridge Signage

Newsbrief - Local News

Written by press release Tuesday, 16 February 2010 10:03

HIGHLANDS, NJ - On Jan 17, Highlands Borough Council passed resolution 10-25 asking the New Jersey Department of Transportation to refrain from adding overhead cantilever signage to the Highlands-Seabright Bridge pending the review of alternatives.  Sea Bright quickly followed with a supporting resolution on February 2. The resolution came after a number of area residents expressed concern over the size and location of the DOT's current proposed signs.

NJ DOT renderings show large green cantilever signs, like those found on the Garden State Parkway, at six locations on and before the bridge.  Several Highlands and Sea Bright residents have questioned the appropriateness of as well as the need for these signs.  “I saw the size of the sign post beside Off The Hook, and I wondered what was going on.  The DOT website showed these enormous interstate signs on our bridge.  I was shocked!” says Highlands resident James Kibler.  Mr. Kibler, along with his wife Kate Kibler responded by starting a petition (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/keep-the-community-charm) calling for reasonable signage that has so far garnered over 700 signatures.

Town officials have been quick to take up the cause.  Councilman Chris Francy and Mayor Anna Little have been working since passing the resolution to collaborate with the DOT in finding a reasonable solution to the sign issue.  “We hope to establish a dialogue with the Department and find a solution that works for everyone.  We believe this can be a win-win,”  one Highlands resident said.

“Etty” Highlights Women’s History Month

Newsbrief - Monmouth County

Written by Brookdale Community College Monday, 15 February 2010 15:46

March 9th at Brookdale

Lincroft, NJ, February 1, 2010 - It was 1941 when Esther, “Etty” Hillesum, a 29-year-old Dutch Jew, was uprooted from her home in the Netherlands and transported to a Nazi concentration camp. Etty documented daily life in Auschwitz through diary entries. She wrote until she was sent to the gas chamber. Forty years later, in 1981, her diaries were discovered and translated into several languages around the world.

On Tuesday, March 9, the Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Education Center brings to Brookdale Community College “Etty,” the one woman stage show depicting the life of Esther “Etty” Hillesum. The presentation shares her struggle to find the good in life and humanity while living through one of the harshest times throughout history.

Adapted and performed by Susan Stein and directed by Austin Pendleton, Etty’s story shows how far hope can bring one person. Etty did not allow herself to feel the victim and through Stein’s portrayal, the audience can see how strong a woman Etty was.

The presentation will be held at the Warner Student Life Center, Navesink I room at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $5.00; for HGHREC Members and BCC students, admission is free. Payment may be made in advance to HGHREC. No credit cards will be accepted. For more information on Brookdales presentation of “Etty,” please call 732-224-1889 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
