SHREWSBURY -   “America for Beginners: A Novel”  by Leah Franqui is the book discussion topic  at the Eastern Branch of the Monmouth County Library next Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Square of Friends Club will meet Jan.  21 at 10 a.m. and again Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. for a discussion of the book,  a first novel by Franqui and one which is  being received with mixed but hopeful reviews for the author.

Described as  funny, poignant and insightful, the novel explores the complexities of  an upper -class woman from India who books a trip to the United States after the death of her husband, in search of their son, who had devastated his traditional parents when he told them he is gay.   A t that time, her husband had told her their son had died and she refused to accept the news, leading to the trip to either find her son or come to terms with his death.

The story captures the emotions the devastated widow and mother experiences in her cross-country tour of America with escorts, as well as the  lessons she and others learn from the experience in forgiveness, hope and acceptance.

The discussions are open to the public, and no advance reservations are necessary   .
